Mr. Lupkin graciously invited Trinity members
to come for two "field trips" to the shop, so that we could see the new
window being built. The following images are from our visits on June 29
and September 14, 2003. (Photos by Lavinia Wright; camera equipment courtesy
of the Rev. Dr. William F. Wright.)
Design for new window ("working" version). The finished window will be 12 feet in diameter! |
The raw material: inch-thick glass blocks made only in Virginia |
Paper templates to guide cutting with diamond saw |
Glass pieces are kept in order on pattern for each panel |
Initial layout for panel shown in last 2 photos here |
Terry Wrasse, builder of the entire window. Each piece is "flaked" with a small hammer to create contoured surfaces |
Glass pieces after flaking |

Witnesses to the process! |
Stacked glass layouts that await final assembly |
Clay bases are applied to inset each piece from the window's outside surface |
Terry pouring resin that forms the glass panel's structure. A layer of sand has been put down first, to create a "mineral" surface on the resin (outside surface of the window)
Pouring very CAREFULLY between each piece! |
It took about 1/2 hour to pour all the resin for this panel
Finally full! The resin sets for twenty minutes before another application of the sand
Sprinkling sand to create mineral texture on inside surface of the resin
The last of the sand goes on. Panel will cure for 48 hours before next step

Clay being removed from another panel

Glorious! (Close-up of a finished panel)
