The Very Rev. Canon

RICHARD M. GEORGE, Dean Emeritus

Dick and Mary George are transplants from the Midwest. Dick grew up in Belvidere, Illinois, Mary in Chicago, and they met at Grinnell College in Iowa. Following college, Dick went to Seabury Western Theological Seminary (SWTS) in Evanston, Illinois. They were married while Dick was a student at SWTS. They have four children-- Mary Beth, Tom, David, and Andrew--and six grandchildren.

Following ordination in 1955, Dick's first call was to be a Canon at St. John's Cathedral, Quincy, Illinois, and from there he went on to be Rector of parishes in Chicago, Lake Geneva and Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.

After sixteen years in Wisconsin, Dick was called to be Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, Peoria, Illinois where he served until called to All Saints', Phoenix, where he served as Pastoral Assistant. Bishop Joseph Heistand appointed Dick to serve as the eleventh Dean of Trinity Cathedral where he served until his retirement. He retired with the title of Dean Emeritus conferred upon him by Bishop Robert Shahan.

When Trinity Cathedral's Interim Dean Bill Greeley was called to be Rector of the Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in April of 2006, Bishop Kirk Smith called Dick out of retirement to serve as Interim Dean until a permanent Dean would be appointed. Dick and Mary live at the Terraces Retirement Community in Phoenix. They enjoy travel, spending time with family and friends, serving as co-fund directors of their Grinnell class, reading, and keeping up with world events and the ever changing landscape of the Church.

Dick likes to think of himself as a fly-fisherman and woodworker. In addition to being of help to retirees through his appointment as Chaplain to retired clergy and spouses, he enjoys reading, and spending time with Mary, and serving on the Resident Council and Interfaith Committee at the Terraces.

The Rev. Canon

Following his ordination to the Diaconate, also at Trinity Cathedral, he served congregations in Williams, Page and Grand Canyon; returning to the Cathedral as Canon Pastor in 1964. Following 20 years serving several non-profit organizations in Phoenix during which time he also served as Vicar of St. Luke's at the Mountain, Phoenix, Canon Ray served eight years as Rector of Church of the Transfiguration in East Mesa from which he retired in 2001.

The Rev.

CRAIG BUSTRIN, Assisting Priest

Craig Bustrin, a third-generation native of Phoenix, was infected with Anglicanism while spending a summer in England as a guide at Coventry Cathedral. He is a graduate of ASU and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. While serving parishes in Michigan and Florida he was a college chaplain and taught medical ethics at the University of Florida Medical School.

Fr. Craig spent the next 22 years as a worker priest in New York City, assisting primarily at the Cathedral of St John the Divine and St Michael’s Church, where he founded the AIDS Ministry Support Group. For ten summers he headed the Fire Island Episcopal Chaplaincy, and during the height of Jane Austin mania, became ‘The Vicar of The Pines.’ In 1997 he made his Off-Broadway debut in a production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest. After a series of improbable coincidences, Craig found himself chaplain to drag queens, club kids, the circuit crowd, and other denizens of New York nightlife.

He enjoys cooking for others, playing the harpsichord, and working on alarming DIY projects which horrify friends and acquaintances. His experience painting icons makes him the only person in his social circle who can wash and dry an egg yolk.

MARTIN POMMERENKE, Director of Operations

Growing up in Glendale & Peoria, Arizona, Martin became actively involved in the life of the church even from a young age as an avocational church musician.  Martin's spiritual journey in his formative years led him through several Protestant expressions: Christian (Campbellite), Baptist, Lutheran, and charismatic.

Martin's first experience of the beauty of the Cathedral and its amazing acoustics was as a choral singer performing Bernstein's Chichester Psalms.  Falling in love with the liturgy, and coming to appreciate the ethos and practices of Anglicanism, he came onto Trinity Cathedral's staff in 1998 as its music intern.   After being confirmed in the Episcopal church, he remained active at the Cathedral and later rejoined the staff in 2001.

Prior to this, Martin worked as a bookseller and as a guest teacher with a focus on music in several metro Phoenix school districts.  He has also worked in an administrative capacity with the Phoenix Bach Choir, Arizona's professional choral ensemble.

Martin focuses his ministry of administration primarily in three areas: communications/publications, event logistics, and finance.  Martin also serves as Clerk of the Chapter, the Cathedral's board of directors.

He holds a B.Mus in Church Music (Summa Cum Laude) from Grand Canyon University with an emphasis in choral conducting.   He received the university's highest academic award, graduating as a Ray-Maben Scholar, and is also a member of Alpha Chi, an honor scholarship society.

Martin is a staff singer at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Tempe, loves music research, and, when the muses speak, composing.  A euphonium player since high school, is a member of the Phoenix Metropolitan Philharmonic Ensemble.  He is an avid reader and enjoys books and articles on urban planning, sociology, information technology, and theology.   He also enjoys writing, biking, politics, mid-century modern architecture, and travel - especially in New Mexico and the Pacific Northwest.  He continues to begrudgingly accept the label of "computer geek".
