The Great Window

THE GREAT WINDOW, north

The theme of the window design is the Trinity present at the creation of the universe. As in the other windows, the Trinity is represented by overlapping white wings. Around the Trinity, we see the beginnings of the created order; form out of chaos, substance out of the void. Below the wings is a symbolic representation of the living earth, woven together from the primal elements. The frame of the individual window panes forms the symbol known to Jewish people as the Magen David, the Star of David, and to other ancient traditions as the hexagram. Cultures have interpreted the hexagram as representing unity and harmony, six compass directions, or the contrast of fire and water. For us, this symbol calls to mind Christianity's roots in Judaism and the unity of the created order.
